Network Evaluation

Bonzai Definition: Network: An electronic system for capturing information from those who have it and making the information available to those who need it when they need it.  A network is made up of physical equipment for entering, processing, storing, and transferring information and the intelligence behind it controlling the entire process.

The current buzzword or phrase Is, "What is my solution?"  The answer is, "A well designed network that is capable of supporting all of the applications you use to capture and retrieve information during the daily course of business and deliver the information to those who need it when they need it."  Read on...

The prominent intelligence component at the highest level is a computer's operating system, typically Windows, or in an IBM environment it may be MVS.  Running under the control of the operating system are all of the applications such as Office, Email, CAD, Citrix, Quickbooks, Custom Written Programs, etc.  Within the network multiple instances of an application may run on multiple computers, and this is usually the case.  The applications are what is used in the daily course of business to support the business functions with the ability to capture and retrieve information.

In order to design or update a network we begin by looking at all the business functions that need support.  Then we determine what information needs to be captured, how that will be done, who needs to have access to the information and how.  We make a list of the most likely applications that are needed to capture the information and give access to the stored information.  Now we chart the data flows and their sizes.  Enter the Network

The applications run on top of the network.  When your network is well designed to support the applications running on it then information flows easily from those who have it to those who need it.  Designing and building networks is our core competency.  We heavily depend on knowing what the network is supporting to do our job.

There are Information Technology businesses that could be lumped into a category known as "Solution Providers" who are very good at selecting applications, customizing them, and installing them on top of a network.  We also have the talent on staff to do this - but we do not.  Instead, we use our talent to build a high level application model that will support the business needs.  From this we construct a network design capable of supporting all the applications properly.  Your network will not be like a patchwork quilt.

The Bonzai Process for improving an existing network or building a new one applies the same four phases with a fifth one if voice traffic is present.  Click on each one to learn more.
